Notes I scribbled on way home from Vegas

13) Other than Times Square in NYC, walking on the Strip in Las Vegas is a unique experience; the lights, the people, the intense heat. Its something I would recommend everyone do once. Its different and fun.

12) This was a great week to go to Vegas (every week is at least good to go); the NBA Summer League is underrated, the World Series of Poker is fascinating to see (even if it is boring as hell to watch for long), and British Open comes on at 1am Thursday/Friday morning. Its destructive to any type of sleep pattern, but there's no shortage of activity, for sure.

11) That said, ESPN does an amazing job editing poker telecasts to make them look as good as they do. There are so many players playing, it has to be terribly difficult to isolate the best stories, especially since the best of the players rarely make it to the final table.

10) Saturday night in Vegas was like Prom Night; tons of young people all dressed up to go out, mostly in black. Tons of energy in the air. I'll put it this way; if I had a daughter, no way she gets within 100 miles of Vegas until she turns 21.

9) AAU basketball comes to Las Vegas this week; wouldn't want to be an AAU coach, responsible for teenagers in a place with so much temptation so close. DisneyWorld seems like a much safer place to go.

8) Cocktail waitress/cab drivers/bartenders in Vegas are eagerly awaiting football season; things get a little slow during week in the summer there.

7) Shuttle from airport to your hotel is a bad idea unless your hotel is on the end of the Strip near MGM. Otherwise, its an endless succession of speedbumps, stop signs and sitting in traffic. Note to self: in September, take a cab from the airport to the hotel. Quicker is better.

6) Read today that a total of $1.5B was bet legally on World Cup soccer. How the hell do you handicap soccer? Notice I said legally-- imagine how much was bet illegally??? Wow.

5) I'm not sold on British Open as a great event; seems like there is way too much luck involved with who wins. Weather changes happen almost every hour; some players get eliminated by when their tee time is.

4) Was good to get back in my car and drive around tonight; its one thing I missed on vacation. That and Arnold Palmer Lite. Could not find it out west, the terrific half iced tea/half lemonade drink.

3) Sad to see that actor James Gammon passed away last week; known as manager Lou Brown in Major League, he was also Don Johnson's dad in Nash Bridges. He also did lot of commercials with his distinctive voice.

2) Baseball's All-Star Game is dying a slow death; they need to spruce it up-- I suggest making it US vs the World one year, then East-West for a year, then AL-NL after that. Mix it up, keep it interesting.

1) I'm saying this for the 100th time, but having the All-Star game count for something is stupid. Really, really stupid. League that win most games in interleague play should have home field edge in World Series.

Tuesday's six-pack

-- Ilya Kovalchuk signed a 17-year, $102M deal with the Devils; hell, if this deal plays out, I'll be 68 years old (God willing) when it ends.
-- 1930 Phillies' bullpen was worst ever, '32 A's were next; right now, the '10 Diamondbacks are the third worst bullpen ever.
-- Brandon Inge (hand) is out for six weeks; Ryan Sweeney (knee) is out for the year, as baseball injuries continue to pile up.
-- Jonathan Herrera homered for the Rockies Monday; he hadn't even hit one home run in batting practice this season.
-- Someone should tell the Mets the All-Star break is over.
-- Mike Pelfrey has now allowed 51 baserunners in his last 14.2 innings, the worst performance by any pitcher in the last 60 years!!!!

Daily Sports Roundup: July 20

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Tigers play host to the Rangers, the Giants send their ace out against the Dodgers, and the Storm look for a victory in San Antonio.

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

The American League schedule for Tuesday offers up Tampa Bay at Baltimore, the Angels at the Yankees, Cleveland at Minnesota, Toronto at Kansas City, Boston at Oakland, the White Sox at Seattle, and Texas at Detroit. The Rangers are expected to go with Tommy Hunter (6-0, 2.39 ERA) in that Tuesday matchup, while the Tigers counter with Armando Galarraga (3-2, 4.45 ERA). Righthander Hunter beat the Red Sox in his last trip to the mound, giving up just two runs over 6 2-3 innings of work. Righthander Galarraga took a no-decision against the Orioles last time out, surrendering three runs on 10 hits over 6 2-3 innings. Galarraga fanned four that game.

Over in the National League on Tuesday it'll be Milwaukee at Pittsburgh, Colorado at Florida, Washington at Cincinnati, San Diego at Atlanta, Houston at the Cubs, the Mets at Arizona, Philadelphia at St. Louis, and San Francisco at the Dodgers. Tim Lincecum (10-4, 2.94 ERA) will get the ball for the Giants in that last matchup, while Clayton Kershaw (9-5, 3.16 ERA) takes the hill for Los Angeles. Righthander Lincecum dazzled the Mets in his most recent start, tossing nine shutout innings while giving up just six hits and striking out five batters. Lefthander Kershaw is coming off a loss to the Cardinals in which he surrendered five runs (four earned) on eight hits in 4 1-3 innings.

Rounding out the Roundup . . .

Finally, there are three games on the WNBA's schedule for Tuesday, with Tulsa at Los Angeles, New York at Connecticut, and Seattle at San Antonio. The Storm improved to 18-2 (and 13-6-1 ATS) with their ninth straight win last time out, beating Minnesota 73-71 on the road. Lauren Jackson scored 26 points for Seattle in that contest. The Silver Stars snapped a three-game losing streak by knocking off Los Angeles 83-73 at home in their last matchup. Roneeka Hodges tossed in 24 points for San Antonio in that game.

Bettor's best friend: Tuesday's wagering tips

Lines off the board

Lines to keep an eye on

Blue Jays at Royals – The total for this game has jumped from an opener of 10 to 10.5 on most boards (check out the wind below).

Phillies at Cardinals – The Red Birds opened as -215 chalk with ace Chris Carpenter on the mound but that moneyline can be found as low as -190.

White Sox at Mariners – An opening total of 7 has moved to 7.5.

Weather report

Who’s hot

San Diego has earned four straight victories (+4.10 units).

Seattle (WNBA) has won nine consecutive games, going 6-3 ATS during that stretch.

The Yankees are 8-2 over a 10-game span.

Who’s not

Arizona is 2-8 in its last 10 games.

The Sparks (WNBA) are 1-4 SU and ATS in their last four outings.

Going into Monday, the Royals were losers of six straight.

Key stat

39 – Number of 1-0 MLB games this season.

Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Pirates center fielder Andrew McCutchen was not in Monday's starting lineup against the Brewers. McCutchen is listed as day-to-day with a mild sprain of the AC joint in his shoulder. He left Sunday's game after making a diving catch and landing awkwardly on his shoulder. X-rays came back negative on McCutchen, who is batting .289 with eight home runs and 30 RBIs this season. Jose Tabata started in center field Monday.

Games of the day

San Diego Padres at Atlanta Braves (-165, Cool

Boston Red Sox at Oakland Athletics (-120, Cool

Notable quotable

"There's no way, with hindsight, I would've ever called up Larry (Bird), called up Magic (Johnson) and said, 'Hey, look, let's get together and play on one team. But things are different. I can't say that's a bad thing. It's an opportunity these kids have today. In all honesty, I was trying to beat those guys."

-- Michael Jordan said about LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh joining forces on the Heat.

Tips and notes

- The weather across the country has turned ominous and baseball total bettors should take note. Only two of the 15 games today could be played under the protection of a retractable roof. There is a 30 percent chance of rain or greater in eight games Tuesday and seven contests are projected to see double-digit wind gusts. Check out daily MLB weather here.

- It’s not football season yet but futures odds are already being hit by sharps. And if you a bettor who likes backing guarantees we’ve got one for you. Dolphins majority owner Steve Ross told reporters in June that he thinks his team, “will be playing in the Super Bowl" this season. Miami went 7-9 last year, missing the playoffs, and have a regular season win total of 8.5. The Dolphins are +2000 to win the AFC in 2010 and +4500 to win Super Bowl XLV.

- Tiger Woods experimented with a new putter and it lasted all of three tournament days. After switching to the Nike Method blade in hopes of attaining better control on the slow St. Andrews’ greens at the British Open, Woods didn’t get find the results he wanted. He needed 99 putts to get through the first three rounds of play and collected 10 three-putts in that span. On Sunday, Woods elected to go back with his Titleist Scotty Cameron Newport 2 putter which had been in his bag since 1999. Tiger has been favored in every tournament he’s entered this season and hasn’t won one.
